THE REAL JOAN OF ARC

Rouen, 1431. Joan of Arc is burned at the stake. The Church and the English Crown believe they have permanently silenced the woman who had turned the Hundred Years’ War on its head. But a few years later, an extraordinary rumor starts spreading throughout the kingdom of France: Joan of Arc is still alive…

Did the “prophetess” really die in 1431, following her trial on charges of heresy and witchcraft? If so, then who is that other Joan who, ten years later, presents herself to King Charles as the “Maid of Orléans”? What if the story of this iconic heroine, known the world over, had been rewritten to serve political ends and help win the war?

Over five centuries, Joan of Arc has inspired countless books and academic thesis, but also fantasies and competing ideologies. How does one find the truth in an ocean of archives, where accounts intersect without ever quite matching up? Drawing on original 15th-century documents, along with reenactments and rare imagery, this documentary reopens the investigation into one of the most unsettling mysteries in French history.
