The Destiny of Rome

The battle of Philippi in 42 BC (episode 1), and that of Actium in 31 BC, (episode 2), would change the face of the world forever. Marc Antony and Octavian were once part of the same triumvirate seeking to avenge Caesar, but later fought over his legacy, with the fate of Rome and its empire in the balance. They first managed to combine their forces to punish Brutus and Cassius, Caesar’s assassins, and to proclaim their legitimacy following the Battle of Philippi. But there could only be one successor to Caesar.

Ten years later, the supreme strategist Octavian waged the naval battle of Actium against his former ally, who now had the backing of Cleopatra. Octavian put an end to Antony and Cleopatra’s military ambitions and became the first Roman emperor under the name of Augustus. We will witness the last moments of the Roman Republic, marked by this terrible duel between two men hungry for glory – a competition between Alexandria and Rome, but also one between youth and maturity. This epic struggle has since become the stuff of legend, involving passion, war, intrigue and the thirst for power.

Filmed entirely using CGI, the series stays as close as possible to historical reality, with characters speaking in Latin and Greek. The Destiny of Rome takes us to the heart of Ancient Rome with its civil wars, and traces the careers of two exceptional leaders: Marc Antony and Octavian. From the assassination of Julius Caesar to Octavian’s triumph over Antony and Cleopatra, this legendary story is told through these two spectacular battles.
