STAX, THE LEGENDARY SOUL LABEL

Despite its short existence (1957-1975), the Stax soul music label became, like Motown, emblematic of global pop culture.

The film tells the epic story of its creation by Jim Stewart, a country music fan, and his sister Estelle Axton, who in 1957 bought a deserted movie theater in the heart of the black ghetto in Memphis, and turned it into a studio. Stax became a laboratory where Black and White people worked together in segregated America.

Punctuated by images of urban frescoes, never-before-seen archives and exclusive testimonials from key players of that time, the film recounts the dazzling success of Stax: a matrix of the best hits of the 1960s concocted by Isaac Hayes, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and Otis Redding, who were the most eminent talents.
