ROME: ST PETER’S BASILICA

Located in the heart of Italy, within the Vatican City, one building alone embodies the history, power and excesses of the Catholic Church: St. Peter’s Basilica.

Measuring 219 meters in length and 155 meters in width, St. Peter’s stands as one of the greatest technical feats of Western architecture. Construction began in 1506 and lasted 120 years, involving thousands of workers and hundreds of architects – including Michelangelo. The crowning achievement of this titanic undertaking was the construction of its dome, rising at 137 meters and weighing around 14,000 tons. Through the centuries, the monument has continued to reveal many secrets, notably with the discovery in the 1940s of human remains beneath its foundations, attributed by the Church to Apostle Saint Peter.

Through CGI, archives, reconstructions and expert insights, this documentary retraces the story this legendary religious megastructure.
