In Tsoundzou 2, a neighborhood in the capital of Mayotte, many teens live in street gangs. Some call themselves the H2R – “heirs of the street”. Theft, extortion, small hustle – they do whatever it takes to survive. With few alternatives, they sometimes have to navigate a fine line between poverty and delinquency.
Each member of the H2R now dreams of a better life. But how can they escape the constant precariousness and violence? How can they find another path when the future seems to offer very few opportunities? Abdallah, an English teacher at a local high school, believes in these young people: he had made it its mission to help them rebuild their lives and imagine a different horizon.
By following their daily lives and giving a voice to these teenagers, this documentary offers a sincere portrait of Mayotte’s youth – a generation caught between survival and the hope for a better future.
