GINGER ROGERS: HOLLYWOOD’S GOLDEN GIRL

An icon of Hollywood’s golden age, Ginger Rogers rose to fame through her legendary duo with Fred Astaire. Over nearly a decade and ten films, the pair made the world dance. But determined not to live in her partner’s shadow, Rogers was determined to take charge of her own career.

Having made her name as a dancer and singer, she reinvented herself as a comedy actress at a time when humor was rarely a woman’s domain. Helped by her mother, she stood up to the studios and became the first woman to win equal pay – and one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood. Yet for all her trailblazing spirit, Ginger Rogers remained a staunch conservative, one who backed the political repression during the McCarthy era…

Drawing on extensive archival footage and film excerpts, this film paints the portrait of a paradoxical icon – one who despite her contradictions continues to inspire a contemporary feminism that reclaims her image.
