In the space of a century, the automobile has transformed our landscapes, revolutionized our lifestyles and shaped our modern societies. For a long time, it was a symbol of freedom and progress. But from the 1970s onwards the myth began to crumble...
The 1973 oil crisis marked a turning point in the history of the automotive industry. Fuel shortage and soaring prices led to major geopolitical conflicts and ushered in new concerns: energy conservation and efficiency and environmental awarness. As the West became aware of its energy dependence and the liberal shift began, the Far East gaigned in market popularity. At the dawn of the 21st century, with the "Dieselgate" scandal, the car is more than ever a burning issue.
From being a brilliant invention - synonymous with independence, development and success - the car has become the subject of controversy, now inseparable from the major issues facing contemporary society. Will it overcome these challenges by reinventing itself? Or has it resolutely reached the end of its road?
Looking back over 50 years of automotive history, this documentary examines the future of a mythical object that encapsulates all the paradoxes of our civilization.
