Martial Raysse, 90, ranks among the most highly valued living French artists in the world. His works have been exhibited in major international museums, from the Centre Pompidou to MoMa, passing by the Tate Gallery in London.
A leading figure in contemporary art, he has nevertheless remained a lifelong rebel, pushing boundaries through constant experimentation and radical shifts. A precursor of French Pop Art in the early 1960s, he achieved early acclaim with works that challenged consumer society. Shunning the spotlight, he then turned his back to the art world in favor of communal living, devoting himself to experimental filmmaking and the creation of poetic objects. He later returned to painting with monumental canvases that unfold a unique vision blending the everyday with the marvelous.
In this documentary, Martial Raysse opens the doors on his studio in Southern France for a rare and intimate conservation – enriched by testimonies of collaborators and close ones. A portrait that draws us deep into the life and work of a singular artist in perpetual reinvention.
